WHAT IS DOMESTIC ABUSE?

Domestic abuse is any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive, threatening, or violent behaviour between individuals who are or have been in an intimate relationship or are family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. It can take many forms, including physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, or financial abuse.

In the UK, domestic abuse is legally recognised under the Domestic Abuse Act 2021, which provides a comprehensive definition and reinforces protections for victims. It acknowledges that abuse is not just physical violence but also includes coercive control, economic abuse, and emotional harm.

Types of Domestic Abuse:

  • Physical Abuse – Hitting, slapping, pushing, or any use of physical force.
  • Emotional & Psychological Abuse – Insulting, belittling, gaslighting, or isolating a person from friends and family.
  • Coercive Control – A pattern of controlling behaviour, such as monitoring activities, restricting access to money, or making threats.
  • Sexual Abuse – Any form of non-consensual sexual activity, including forced participation in sexual acts.
  • Financial Abuse – Controlling a person’s money, restricting access to resources, or accumulating debt in their name.

Domestic abuse can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. It often has severe and lasting emotional, psychological, and physical effects on victims and their families.
