What is Legal Aid?
Legal Aid provides financial support for legal advice, family mediation, and representation in court or tribunal proceedings. It ensures that everyone, regardless of their financial situation, can access justice when faced with legal issues
Eligibility for Legal Aid is determined based on two main factors:
- The type of case
- The applicant’s financial circumstances
To qualify, you must demonstrate that your case is serious and that you cannot afford to pay for legal services. Financial eligibility is assessed through a means test, which considers your income, savings, and assets.
Generally, you may be eligible for Legal Aid if:
- Your gross monthly income is below £2,657
- Your disposable monthly income does not exceed £733
- Your disposable capital (savings and assets) is less than £8,000
Certain benefits, such as Universal Credit, may automatically qualify you for Legal Aid
